From a long line of traditional bakers I was as a child always involved in our family bakery, in one way or another. From helping on the roll runs to serving in the shops it was a rare day when you were found looking for a job! And when our Head Confectioner retired it seemed almost a natural progression into making all the celebration, corporate, wedding and speciality cakes for, what seemed like at times, half of Scotland.
When I married and moved to Edinburgh (commuting to Falkirk each day) I was keen to progress my cake decorating skills and enrolled at Jewel and Esk Valley College where I studied for two years. But as family members retired I took the decision not to continue with the long commute and the piping tubes were temporarily laid to rest.
Once my children were born I was thrust into the delights of children’s birthdays and in looking for a personalised cake for my daughter’s first birthday I was almost shocked at the price and quality of some of the cakes on offer. Hence the dust was blown off the cake decorating box and the piping tubes resurrected. I have dabbled with making birthday, celebration and cupcakes for friends and family for several years now and have decided it is now time follow their recommendations and sell them. And so here we are with the birth of Regal and Royal and who knows – it might be the start of a new family business.
